Event: One Story of Hope - A Community Fundraising

LondonSomali Youth Forum (LSYF) and Jamal Osman from Channel 4 News are calling all Somalis to support them in helping Abdullahi, a mentally ill patient who Jamal encountered last year during one of his news trips to Somalia. Jamal was moved and alarmed by the dire conditions Abdullahi was forced to endure in his captivity ‘as mad man’ that should be chained from society.

It was important to Jamal to help Abdullahi and others who are in similar conditions by documenting their treatment and creating awareness of the conditions they are currently in.

After his documentary was released it caught attention from the mass. It also won a prestigious award from Mind (National Mental Health Charity); the documentary was nominated alongside the likes of Sky News and BBC who did particular pieces on mental health.

The documentary is truly powerful; it will take you on a journey with Abdullahi, starting with him being chained like an animal to being released from a mental health clinic after receiving medication and treatment. Jamal has now been notified that Abdullahi is now well and recovering to his normal original self where for the first time he is reported to be talking about marriage and building a separate small room for himself near where he was previously chained.

LSYF and Jamal Osman have come together to organise a fundraiser for Abdullahi, his family and his future.

They aim to encourage culture change on the issue and open dialogue on the challenges many mental ill people face in Somalia.

Jamal will go back to Somalia to visit the family again and the medical centre where Abdullahi was treated with his Channel 4 crew documenting on the changes that are happening.

This is a great cause to be working on and we would urge you all to please join us and attend that evening where Somali poets, musicians, comedians and community leaders, (such as Aar Maanta, and Prince Abdi) will all be involved in the conversation.

Jamal Osman, his Channel 4 Team and Somali Mental Health specialist will be there to answer questions from their experience and Mental Health in Somalia.

Elmimag will be covering the event and will keep you updated via our twitter.

Elmimag and LSYF urges you all to please use your social platforms and following to spread the word. It is our job as the Somali community to not only help one another but also speak out actively on such an important issue. So share on Facebook, RT or Tweet on twitter and post this image bellow on your Instagram, may Allah reward you all on your efforts.
